Cutting-edge questions on the interface of law and technology

We are committed to raising awareness about the international human rights law in digital spheres. The Monroe E. Price Media Law Moot Court Programme aims to foster and cultivate interest in freedom of expression issues and the role of the media and information technologies in societies around the world. It was established by the Programme in Comparative Media Law & Policy at the University of Oxford in 2008.

Defend Freedom of Speech

International human rights law should be understood as a critical framework for the protection and respect for human rights when combating hateful speech. Online hate speech can result in deleterious outcomes. When the phrase is abused, it can provide ill-intentioned States with a tool to punish and restrict speech that is entirely legitimate and even necessary in rights-respecting societies. It is therefore important that States and companies address the problems of hate speech with a determination to protect those at risk of being silenced and to promote open and rigorous debate on even the most sensitive issues in the public interest.
