Governance & Ethics

Governance & Ethics

Our Institute takes academic ethics seriously

We are committed to high standards of integrity and academic independence. We embrace critical discourse at all stages of our work. We do not tolerate racism, discrimination and harassment. We encourage our people aboard to act in good faith and report incidents in violation of our guidelines.
We nurture the bold thinkers of tomorrow.

Diversity

We embrace diversity and are committed to defending it. We condemn discrimination and harassment and prohibit retaliation. Diversity matters.

Integrity

We promote and maintain high standards of integrity and accountability in the conduct of research. Academic freedom is paramount.

Openness

We establish an open platform for exchange with various stakeholders, while actively promoting dialogue between academia and civil society.

Independence

We carry out the activities undertaken in co-operation with third parties strictly on our own responsibility.
We act pro bono.
Our Code of Conduct
is exemplary for Governance & Ethics in the research and policy community. We are convinced that it steers our Institute in the right direction. Our Code will dynamically adapt to new insights and experiences in a constant exchange with stakeholders within and outside the academic community. Founding an institute is not easy. For this, we will approach this challenge with the necessary commitment, energy, competence and, of course, humility.

Our Institute designates

an Ombudsman for Integrity

In compliance with the Federal General Equal Treatment Act, we appoint an Ombudsman for Integrity with the mandate to process complaints within the meaning of Section 13. The Ombudsman is responsible for the appropriate conduct of the complaint procedure in effectively balancing all interests of the involved parties and guaranteeing the confidentiality of the procedure according to the presumption of innocence toward fair conflict resolution without undue delay.
In compliance with the Code of Conduct of the German Research Foundation, the Ombudsman for Integrity will further investigate and preside over procedures regarding allegations of scientific misconduct. In case of a serious breach of the rules of good scientific practice, the Ombudsman appoints an independent Commission that shall investigate without undue delay in accordance with procedural maxims whether there is a scientific misconduct.
